As you explore the site, you may notice an interesting sound.

The sound you hear belongs to the Coquí, one of the island’s most recognizable and cherished voices. Named after its famous “ko-kee” call, this tiny tree frog is found only in Puerto Rico and holds a special place in local culture.

Known scientifically as Eleutherodactylus coqui, the Coquí grows only 1–2 inches long, yet its sound fills entire forests each night. Unlike other frogs, it is born fully formed, skipping the tadpole stage entirely.

So when you hear this call while exploring the network, you’re not just browsing beaches — you’re stepping into the soul of the island.

Parking & Hours of Operation

๐Ÿš— Parking Fee: Official Balneario government beach parking is typically $4.00 per car, with $5.00–$8.00 charges for larger vehicles like minivans or buses. Visitors with motorbikes may pay around $2.00 (standard daily rates as of 2025).

๐Ÿ“ Additional Notes: The official paid parking area is managed by the Puerto Rico National Parks Company. Attendants are usually present at the entrance to collect the parking fee. They may also guide you to available spaces and monitor the lot during open hours. Hours with attendants generally align with lifeguard and facility hours: around 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, though this can vary slightly based on the season, holidays or day of the week. If you park outside the official Balneario entrance, behind or in front of the Luquillo kiosks (private businesses). This option has no fee but doesn't include access to the Beach facilities such as bathrooms and showers.

๐ŸŒŠ Beach Etiquette & Conservation

  • Leave no trace – Take everything you bring with you and leave the beach cleaner than you found it.
  • Respect wildlife – Observe from a distance and never feed animals. If you spot sea turtles, give them space.
  • Protect turtle nests – Avoid disturbing marked nesting areas and keep bright lights off the beach at night.
  • Support local businesses – Choose local food, shops, and tours when you can—your trip directly supports Puerto Rico’s communities.
  • Dispose of trash responsibly – Use bins when available, and if they’re full, take your trash with you.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen – Many nature reserves require it. Reef-safe products help protect coral and marine life.
  • Keep music at a respectful volume – Preserve the natural soundscape so everyone can enjoy the beach.
